"創業から樟脳は最大の課題であり続けた。日清戦争で台湾の樟樹を得た日本は世界唯一の樟脳国となったが、ドイツが合成樟脳の工業生産に成功すると、天然樟脳は10年たたないうちに値段を5分の1へ下げて対抗した。樟樹から樟脳を採るときに大量に出る樟脳油を高価な香料や薬品へ変えれば、天然樟脳の値下がりを埋め合わせられる——堀内利器氏が1929年8月の\"高砂香料時報\"で示した見立てである。ただし白油・赤油・藍色油に分かれる樟脳副産油は1927年まで神戸の鈴木商店が一手に握り、高砂香料は原料に手が届かなかった。金融恐慌をまともにかぶった鈴木商店が1927年4月4日に倒産すると、年産約3,000トンの副産油の販売が自由になった。\n\n高砂香料は商工省から工業研究奨励金を数回受け、これを元手に設備を広げてオゾン酸化法の研究に入った。酸素を無声放電にさらす従来の方法では殺菌に使う程度の量しか得られないため、電圧を1万ボルト内外へ上げたうえで高周波を加え、ドイツ・ハンブルクのバニリンファブリクが工業化していた酸化剤としての利用に着手した。1928年に丁字油のオイゲノールを原料とするバニリンを、1929年には台湾の樟脳赤油から採ったサフロールを原料とするヘリオトロピンを創製し、外国製品と遜色のない品質を得た。1929年にはスイスへアフロール3トンを輸出した。1932年9月、プロトカテキュイック・アルデヒドとその誘導体の製造法で堀内利器氏と平泉貞吉氏に帝国発明協会から恩賜発明奨励金600円が交付された。\n\n台湾専売局の一部の担当官は1929年から1932年にかけて、樟脳副産油加工の合理化として日本香料薬品との合併を勧めた。堀内利器氏は台湾に渡って庶務課長の渡部慶之進氏と会い、商事優先の日本香料薬品と技術優先の高砂香料では合併しても実効が上がらないと説き、1932年11月に勧告を退けた。逆に渡部慶之進氏は台北への工場建設を持ちかけ、高砂香料は1934年3月に台北工場建設陳情書を提出した。台湾電力から台北市大安字竜安坡の約11,550平方メートルを買収し、1935年5月4日に開場式を行った。払下げは1930年にリナリルアセテート原料の芳油が特価で始まり、台北工場の完成した1935年に副産油全部の払下げ契約へ広がった。1938年7月には本社を台北工場へ移し、資本金を250万円へ増やした。", "日華事変が長期化するなか、増資を願い出ても物資統制令下の原料配給を願い出ても、高砂香料という社名では話が進まなかった。1939年7月、社名を高砂化学工業へ改め、果実エッセンス・選鉱剤・溶剤・工業薬品の製造を開始した。主原料の樟脳副産油は変わらないまま、製品の出口だけを香料から工業薬品へ移している。非鉄金属の増産で浮遊選鉱剤の需要が高まると、堀内利器氏は1937年に旭電化の技師とともに足尾銅山を訪ね、高砂浮鉱油と名付けた選鉱剤を生んだ。原料には台湾の樟脳とジャワのシトロネラ油を使い、最盛期の生産は年間1,000トンに達した。1941年9月、堀内利器氏は日本選鉱剤統制株式会社の社長に就任した。\n\n1941年3月、堀内利器専務は帝国人造絹絲・旭電化工業・三井化学・台湾電力・日本カーバイトの出資を得て資本金500万円の台湾有機合成株式会社を設立し、専務取締役に就任した。台湾の安い電力と石灰石からカーバイトを作り、アセチレンを経て航空燃料の原料であるブタノールを合成する計画で、工場用地は新竹市東勢の約43万平方メートル。一方、創業を担った3人は4年余のあいだに相次いで欠けた。1937年4月18日に八木竹四郎常務が47歳で急逝し、1938年6月25日には甲斐荘楠香社長が59歳で世を去った。1942年5月8日、南方経済調査団員として乗り込んだ太洋丸が東支那海で撃沈され、堀内利器専務も52歳で殉職した。同年6月の株主総会以降、社長の席は空席のまま、平泉貞吉常務と阿部定雄常務の2名が会社を代表する合議制へ移った。\n\n1942年3月15日、高砂化学工業は東京支店と大阪支店を出張所へ縮小し、香料会社としての営業をほぼ止めた。東京工場は飛行機用塗料溶剤ベンジルアルコールの需要増を受けて1942年9月に軍監督工場、1943年10月には陸海軍共同管理工場に指定された。フェニルエチルアルコールからは電波兵器向けの高周波絶縁材の原料となるスチレンモノマーを作り、オゾン発生装置を使ってロケットエンジン用酸化剤の過酸化水素濃厚液を試作した。1945年2月9日には札幌市外琴似町の矢沢薄荷工場を転用し、浮遊選鉱に欠かせないエチルザンセートの生産に入った。同年4月15日の空襲で、蒲田の東京工場は鉄筋コンクリート2階建1棟を残して焼け落ちた。", "1945年12月、高砂化学工業は連合国軍総司令部と大蔵省から在外会社としての指定管理を受けた。1938年7月に本社を台北工場へ移していたためで、内地の事業場だけが再開の許可を得て、空襲で焼けた東京工場の復旧に入った。台北工場は接収されたまま縁が切れ、台湾産の樟脳副産油を一手に払い下げられてきた実績は、内地産の原料には通用しなかった。復興は、疎開先の日高工場と札幌工場へ移していた装置の一部を回収し、派遣していた人員を戻すところから始まった。内地産の樟脳副産油については、病気で静養していた渡部慶之進氏に依頼して大蔵省筋へ働きかけ、平泉貞吉常務は再製樟脳との間にルートを開いた。シトロネラ油は結核治療薬ロジン酸を製造する名目で総司令部の許可を得て、インドネシアから約5トンを輸入した。\n\n1946年のはじめ、元海軍大佐の鶴尾定雄氏から、平塚市にある旧海軍相模工廠化学実験部を工場として転用できるという話が、長瀬義治常務へ持ち込まれた。長瀬義治常務と鶴尾定雄氏は親戚の間柄だった。台北工場を失っていた高砂化学工業はこの話に心を動かしたが、社内の意見はまちまちで、最後は長瀬義治常務の裁決で開設に踏み切った。平塚工場の敷地は約3万9,600平方メートルで、爆撃の跡が残る荒れ地に主力工場3棟が並ぶだけだったが、その広さと形はすでに失っていた台北工場にほぼ重なっていた。そこへ至るまで、総司令部や関係官庁との交渉は方針が固まらないまま長引き、大蔵省国有財産部が一部の使用を認めたのは8月のことである。工場が開いたのは1947年3月8日で、初代工場長の鶴尾定雄氏のもと約50名が働き、ベンジルクロライド、サフロール、選鉱剤を主につくった。\n\n在外会社の指定は資金の調達を縛った。1948年8月4日、高砂化学工業はその不便から抜けるために内地法人の高砂香料株式会社を設立し、資本金250万円で出発して10月末に500万円、12月には1,000万円まで積み増して平塚工場の運転資金に充てた。1949年8月に内地財産の整理を認める政令が出ると、高砂化学工業は1,000万円を受け取り、それを旧株主へ無償で配った。続いて1951年2月1日、資本金1,000万円で新しい高砂化学工業が生まれた。それまでの体制は、東京工場を高砂化学工業、平塚工場を高砂香料の生産部門とし、販売はどちらの分も高砂香料が受け持つ二本立てだった。その高砂香料は別会社でいる理由を失い、同年8月1日に新会社と対等に合併した。払込資本金は2,000万円となり、商号は高砂香料工業に改まった。経営陣は社長が平泉貞吉氏、専務が長瀬義治氏、常務が中西健次氏である。", "販売価格の下落は、1951年7月の休戦交渉入りで景気が沈静したことに始まる。それまでは朝鮮戦争の特需で、香料も盛んに買い進まれていた。同年後半には高値の時期に注文した輸入香料が届き始め、金融が詰まるなかで相場はその輸入原価より安くなった。香料全体の値下がりは平均2割に及び、タール系の合成香料は原料が高いため輸入品と勝負にならなかった。さらに、在外会社として猶予されていた管理期間5年分の税3,500万円が、新会社の発足と同時に課された。分割で納める了承は得たが、月に300万円の支払いは当時の高砂香料工業にとって重かった。1951年12月に倍額増資して資本金を4,000万円としても金融難からは逃れられず、1952年4月から給料の遅配が始まり、8月には分割支払いにまで追い込まれて年末まで続いた。\n\n中西健次常務と日本生命保険を結んだのは、名古屋高商で1年上にあたる朝日物産の浅野常務と、その同級生で同社の東京財務部長だった人物との縁である。財務を受け持っていた同常務は金融難をしのぐ手立てとして同社に働きかけ、1951年5月に1,500万円を借り入れた。担保に差し入れたのは東京工場と平塚工場の工場財団である。東京工場の土地は3分の2が中江龍二氏のものだったので、この機に同氏から譲り受けた。だがこの融資は後ろ向きの救済に使われて資金として生きず、日本生命保険から非難され、責任を追及された。救済融資にあたって日本生命保険は、自らは設備資金だけを持ち運転資金は市中銀行から受けるべきだとして、単独での融資を拒んだ。三菱・大和・三和の各行と折衝した末、設備資金は日本生命保険、運転資金は三菱銀行を主として大和銀行が支える形に落ち着いた。\n\n人員整理は退職者の自発的な辞表による、という点まで日本生命保険は求めており、これを労働組合との団交を重ねて収めたのが中西健次常務だった。同社が救済融資の条件とした3点は、役員を更迭して簡素にする、収益を生まない部門を削る、確実な最低月商を決めて利益の出る管理方式にする、というものだった。責任は渡部慶之進氏が代表取締役会長として全面的に負い、長瀬義治専務も責任を取る形で再選されず、高砂香料工業を去った。合理化の目標は工場を平塚へ集め、蒲田に研究所と倉庫だけを残すことに置かれ、実際に日高工場は1952年10月に南海果工として切り離され、札幌工場は1953年6月に閉じて関西ペイントへ売られた。選鉱剤の販売は協和醗酵と共同で設立したフロス化学に移し、自社には製造だけを残した。月商5,000万円まで抑えた新体制で、1953年9月期は売上3億3,589万円・利益426万円を計上した。", "復調の導火線は合成l-メントールだった。d-シトロネラールからl-メントールが得られること自体は既知だが、副生する異性メントールを工業的に完全分離する技術が確立されず、天然品に対抗できる合成品は出遅れていた。平泉貞吉氏は京都帝大時代にメントール異性体を研究してイソメントンの単離証明に成功しており、恩師の長男である小松昭氏に製造研究を命じた。桂重雄研究所長のもとで完全分離の技術が確立され、1954年に国内初の合成メントールの製造へ届いた。ハッカは投機の対象とみられ、製造へ踏み切るまで役員会では激しい議論が交わされた。北海道産の天然ハッカは減産で輸入も許されず、価格は1キログラム1万円以上へ暴騰していた。1962年時点で合成品は製法特許に支えられて国内生産を独占し、天然品を含む国内需要の約3分の1を供給した。\n\n1957年に完成させた粉末香料「高砂ミクロン」は、液状の香料を乳化したうえで被膜剤に包み、乾かして粉にする製法で、粉末インスタント・ジュースの急激な需要を取り込んだ。合成香料だけでは足りなかった需要の幅を、この製品が補った。濃縮果汁をわが国で初めてつくったのは日高工場から分かれた南海果工で、これが清涼飲料への道を開いた。1962年、平塚工場に大型のスプレードライヤー5台が据えられた。販路では名古屋出張所が4年ばかりで約10倍へ伸び、1960年6月に支店へ格上げされた。粉末ジュースが興った中京は、こうして戦後最初に固めた地盤となった。同年12月にはニューヨークとパリに駐在所を置き、パリには調合香料研究室を併せて主任調香師ピエール・カルノー氏を迎えた。1962年9月期の販売は食品香料33%、合成香料19%、調合香料12%で、販売先は約1,200社に及んだ。\n\n1963年1月4日、高砂香料工業は東京証券取引所第2部へ上場した。株式公開は香料会社として日本で最初、世界でも3番目とされた。中西健次社長は同年度の支所長会議で、1965年度に月商7億円・従業員700人・利益率7%を目指す「スリーセブン」を掲げ、月商は第31期に達した。1968年11月、手狭になった平塚を受ける磐田工場が竣工し、12月の半額増資で資本金は11億2,500万円となった。1969年8月に東証第1部へ昇格し、1971年9月の増資で資本金18億円、大阪・名古屋にも上場した。年2回決算の1971年3月期の売上高は94億1,200万円に達した。増資手取の大半は磐田工場へ向かい、価格の振れる植物性原料から石油化学系原料への転換に充てられた。原料の相場に収益を握られない体をつくることが、次の課題として残った。",
