"1914年に第一次大戦が始まると、輸入の顔料と染料を練って加工していた印刷インキ業界は、原材料の入手の見通しを失った。レーキ顔料の元になるアニリンやアリザリンの染料はドイツとオーストリアが産地で、各インキ工場は供給難に直面した。富久町工場では製造部長の横田源太郎氏のもとで、クローム黄3種とクローム赤を原料から自製し、ほかの色も外国染料から顔料を起こした。業界誌「印刷工芸」の1917年4月号は、ミロリブルーとブロンズブルーの完成を伝えた。当時の記事は東洋インキ製造を東京の印刷インキ業者の首位に挙げた。1906年から黄鉛を作ってきた経験が、輸入の途絶に耐える下地になったと推察される。\n\n1920年3月、米国から導入したHB製版機の1号機が大阪の市田オフセットに据えられ、1921年12月には凸版印刷の東京工場に2号機が入った。多色の原画を機械で版に分解する方式で、製版の能率を数十倍に高めるとされた。東洋インキ製造は1918年、富久町工場の建物と電気機関の増設について許可を相次いで受け、ガス機関から電動機への切り替えを進めた。製品売上高は1921年上期の321,359円から1923年上期の440,958円に増えた。1922年には印刷局出身の稲垣喜一氏が入社し、レーキレッドDを中心に日本で最初の本格的なレーキ顔料の製造を始めた。色刷りの増加に合わせて設備と顔料の技術を同時に厚くしたことが、後の有機顔料の量産の起点になったと思われる。\n\n1923年9月1日の関東大震災で、京橋区南鍛治町の本社は本屋3棟・付属建物7棟・土蔵1棟を収蔵品ごと焼失した。富久町工場と柏木分工場は焼失を免れ、東洋インキ製造は9月10日に富久町工場へ仮営業所の看板を掲げた。当期は23万円余の純損失を計上して無配とし、保険金も倉庫の収蔵品にかけた1万3,000円の1割にとどまった。本社は倉庫から再建に着手し、1923年12月末に事務所の一部を、1924年2月末に事務所2棟60坪を完成させた。焼け残った印刷所の需要が平常の3倍に増え地方からの注文も殺到したため、工場と本社の間の運搬を荷車からトラック2台に切り替えた。本社の再建は社内の蓄積だけでまかなった。京橋は1907年に、石版印刷会社の多い地区として本社を構えた場所だった。",
