"日本曹達は1934年に富山県高岡市へ高岡工場を設け、ソーダの外に金属へ広げる拠点を持った。中野友禮氏は1932年ごろから非鉄金属全般の製造を構想し、1934年にはアルミニウムの製造研究を命じていた。高岡電灯の支配人兼営業部長の西泰蔵氏から余った電力を安く使える見込みを得て、小矢部川沿いの向野に約2万坪の用地を得た。建設資金は資材を含めて340万円で、同じ1934年5月には株式を公開して資本金を1000万円に増資していた。中古の機械を使うことの多かった従来と異なり、新品の機械で建てた工場は同年9月に水銀法の苛性ソーダと薬品で動き出した。1937年5月にはアルミニウムの製品を出し、1938年ごろからはアルミニウムを主体とする海軍指定工場となった。\n\n日本曹達は1936年11月に資本金を1000万円から2500万円へ増資し、同時に中野友禮氏が2代目の社長に就任した。1935年12月の埼玉工場、1936年5月の富山県の岩瀬工場と工場の新設が続き、1000万円の資本では拡張の資金を賄えなくなっていた。増資を阻んだのは社長の鈴木寅彦氏の立場で、鈴木寅彦氏は東京瓦斯の社長を兼ね、衆議院に議席を持つ憲政会の有力者だった。政界の有力者を社長に置く会社として金融界から敬遠され、増資の見通しは立たなかった。中野友禮氏の友人の菅原通済氏は大阪の金融業者に新株の多くを引き受けさせ、鈴木寅彦氏に社長の退任を強く求めた。鈴木寅彦氏は1936年4月7日に辞任し、初代社長の後を中野友禮氏が継いだ。\n\n社長に就任した中野友禮氏は1936年12月、海軍の要請を受けて航空燃料の添加剤である四エチル鉛の研究を二本木工場で始めた。原料と電力の自給を求めて、亜鉛鉱の葡萄鉱山と精錬用の炭鉱を傘下に置き、それらを統括する日曹鉱業を設けた。矢代川の水力7900キロワットに火力3600キロワットを加え、豊水期の余剰電力で合金鉄を造り、米子製鋼所と大島製鋼所も傘下に収めた。1937年ごろには資本金8000万円の日本曹達の下に直系会社15社を含む関係会社54社が並び、公称資本金の総額は4億3000万円に達した。中野友禮氏は、自身の企業群を一つの事業から自然に膨らんだものと説明した。副生物と原料を順にたどる経営の連鎖が、40余の傍系会社を抱える日曹コンツェルンを生んだのだろう。",
