          "text": "1977年4月28日、長谷川周重氏の後任として社長に就任した。取締役副社長に上がったのは前月の3月で、副社長を1か月務めただけの昇格である。石油危機後の不況は深く、エチレン業界は1975年1月から3月まで50%の減産に入り、社史は肥料・工業薬品・合成樹脂・軽金属の大型部門がそろって悪化し、恒常的に利益を上げていたのは農薬と医薬品の2部門だけだったと記す。規模重視から収益力重視への転換は、この交代とともに始まった。",

          "text": "電力を大量に食うアルミ製錬は二度の石油危機で立ち行かなくなり、1981年10月に製錬事業から撤退した。国内の石油化学も1983年1月に愛媛のエチレンを止めて千葉へ集約している。その一方で1982年2月に日本・インドネシア経済協力事業のアサハン・アルミニウムが、1984年3月には日本・シンガポール経済協力事業として年産30万トンのシンガポール石油化学コンビナートが動き出した。1984年2月には稲畑産業との合弁で住友製薬を設立し、同年10月に医薬品事業を移した。売上高は1976年12月期の5,561億円から1984年12月期の7,038億円、当期純利益は35億円から142億円になった。"
