"1908年、三菱製紙所は台湾中部で1万5000町歩の竹林について払下げを得た。創立期の原料はボロと藁が大半で、木材パルプの比率が少しずつ上がりつつあった。国内では王子製紙と富士製紙が北海道の森林資源に目を付け、1904年ごろから新工場を相次いで建てた。一方で世界では木材の蓄積量が将来尽きるとの不安が強まり、木材以外の植物繊維を探る研究が進んだ。三菱製紙所は代わりの繊維として竹を選び、竹パルプの製造を決めた。立地に台湾を選んだのは、天然資源が豊富で、台湾総督府も内地の事業家による開発を強く望んでいたためである。中央部の竹林は栽培と管理を適正にすれば尽きないと見込み、竹林の中央に大型のパルプ工場を置く計画とした。\n\n台湾三菱製紙所は1911年初めに操業を始め、世界で初めて竹パルプの工業化を果たした。同年8月31日、台湾でも例のない強さの台風が工場を襲い、再起が危ぶまれるほどの損害が出た。3か月半をかけて復旧したものの、その後の業績は悪化を続けた。竹材が計画どおりに集まらず、原料費・人件費・運賃も見込みを上回って原価が大きく膨らんだ。竹パルプの紙は紙業界になじみが薄く、需要も広がらなかった。その後も台風は毎年工場を襲い、三菱製紙所は1916年に台湾の工場を閉鎖した。竹パルプを消化する手立てとして高砂工場で和紙を試作し、1913年に5号機を据えて和紙の本格生産に移っていた。台湾の事業は撤退に終わったものの、その原料の使い道として始めた和紙が高砂工場の新しい製品になったと思われる。",
