"事業の出発点は、1913年7月に坂田武雄氏が横浜の六角橋に開いた農園である。当初の名は朝日農園で、横浜に置かれたこの個人経営の農園は、ゆり根や苗木を欧米へ輸出することを主な目的としていた。坂田武雄氏は東京帝国大学農学実科の出身で、農商務省の海外派遣実習生として米国の種苗生産販売会社で研修を積んだ技術者だった。植物が好きで事業を起こした人物であり、経営では種子の品質を第一とした。農園はのちに坂田商会と名を改め、シカゴに支店を設けて、米国の買い手と直接取引する販路を得た。国内の園芸市場ではなく、研修で取引の実情を知った欧米の需要から事業を組み立てたとみられる。\n\n当時の坂田商会には自前で新種を開発する力がなく、海外業者の品種を育てて種を採る受託仕事にとどまっていた。そうした仕事の一つとして、1925年ごろ英国の種苗業者からキャベツの採種を引き受け、前払い金5万円を受領している。資金繰りに苦しむ社内では、先に入ったこの報酬に手をつけてよいかが何度も論じられた。その年は天候がよく、畑の出来も順調そうだったが、協力農家に種を配って育てさせた株からは種子が1粒も採れず、業者から前払い金を返すよう求められた。坂田武雄氏は前払い金に手を付けずに残していたため、そのまま返還して取引先を失わずに済んだ。この一件の後、坂田武雄氏は見込みで投資せず、利益に見合う範囲でだけ設備を整える方針を貫いた。自然を相手にする以上は不測の事態に備えるという教訓は、1999年時点でも経営陣に引き継がれていた。天候という制御できない供給制約を抱える事業で、手元資金を厚く持つ財務方針の起点になったとみられる。\n\n坂田農園は1922年1月に坂田商会へ改称した。翌1923年9月の関東大震災では社屋を焼失している。種子は外見から品質の良否を判別できず、買い手は売り手を信じて使うほかない商品である。しかも買い手にとっては、その年の収穫を左右する資材でもあった。坂田商会は創業当初から「品質・誠実・奉仕」を経営の基本方針に据えた。白菜は採種が入梅と重なり、雨の多い年には莢の中で発芽して発芽率が下がったが、坂田商会はそうした年の種子に2倍蒔くよう注記を添えて売った。発芽率が落ちた種子にはその率を書き添えて売るのが、うそのない商売を掲げた同社のやり方だった。品質の悪い種子を売らないことを貫き、研究に力を注いだのは坂田武雄氏である。欧米の業者のように海の向こうにいる買い手には品質を確かめる方法がいっそう乏しく、取引を保証するのは供給者の評判そのものになる。", "戦後の坂田種苗は、花の種子から野菜の種子へ研究の主力を移した。花よりも食べるものの市場のほうがずっと大きいという判断によるものであった。1951年4月には東北大学農学部を出た金子善一郎氏が入社し、茅ヶ崎農場でトマトの研究に従事した。同年12月、横浜市内に売店を開設し、消費者へ直接売る場を持った。この直営店は、その後47年にわたり同社で唯一の小売の窓口であり続けた。単体の売上高は、戦後の混乱期以降、途切れることなく毎年増え続けた。戦前の坂田商会は欧米の業者へ花種子を送る輸出業者であり、国内の農家や家庭を相手にする商売ではなかった。\n\n一重咲きペチュニアの入賞で戻った信用は、花の領域にとどまるものであった。1959年1月にはキャベツの「金盃甘藍」が農林大臣賞を受けた。1959年4月に長野県へ三郷試験場、翌1960年4月に藤沢市へ長後試験場を開設した。入賞と受賞は、いずれも第三者が品質を判定した結果であり、買い手の側から確かめられた。種子の良否が外見で分からない以上、こうした評価は買い手に対する品質の代理指標として働いた。研究の手続きそのものは作物を問わず、花で積んだ交配と選抜の方法は野菜にもそのまま移せた。\n\n坂田武雄氏は1951年ごろ欧州の農村でメロンを口にしてその味に目を留め、種子を日本へ持ち帰った。この系統を改良した父方の親に日本在来のまくわうりを母方として掛け合わせ、1961年に日本初のF1メロン、プリンスメロンができあがった。そのころのメロンは温室で1個ずつ手をかけて育て、産地の生産者の名前を付けて売る高級品だった。坂田種苗はその味に近いものを露地で安く作ることを狙っていた。網目がなく果肉が赤い外見は、売り出した当初、消費者に受け入れられにくかったが、農家には作りやすく甘い味でもあったため、1965年ごろから広まった。", "1977年7月、坂田種苗は米国カリフォルニア州に現地法人サカタ・シード・アメリカを設立した。サンフランシスコには5万坪の研究農場を置いた。金子善一郎氏は、海外の育種農場をこの州から他地域へ広げるつもりはないと明言し、理由を3つ挙げた。西海岸の気候は日本に近く、育種の技術をそのまま移すことができる。背後には広大な市場があり、品種保護制度と採種農家も整っていた。1987年時点で、輸出は総売上高の13〜15%を占めた。日本の制度が与えなかった品種の法的な保護を、進出先の制度が肩代わりした。\n\n1982年には、より味の良いものを求める需要に応えてアンデスメロンを開発した。1983年度、坂田種苗の売上高は217億円で、業界首位のタキイ種苗の318億円を下回った。しかし経常利益は48億円とタキイの52億円に迫り、売上高経常利益率では22.0%対16.2%と逆転した。この差は、狙う作物の違いから生まれていた。タキイのヒット商品は大根・白菜・キャベツという在来型の野菜であった。坂田種苗はデザート・スナック・サラダ用の作物を開発対象に据えた。高値で出荷できる作物ほど生産費に占める種子の比率は小さく、種子価格を高く設定できた。坂田種苗は出荷の時期に業者を集めて試食会を催し、テレビで広告を流した。品種を作るだけでなく、その品種が高く売れる市場まで作りにいった。\n\n坂田武雄氏は借金を嫌い、坂田種苗は創業以来、無借金経営を続けた。見込みで投資せず、利益に見合う範囲でだけ設備を整える方針も守られた。1984年4月、千葉県君津市にバイオテクノロジーの研究施設を開設した。この施設だけで2億5千万円を投じたが、当時の資本金は3億円であった。同業では、タキイ種苗が三菱化成とバイオ研究で提携し、カネコ種苗は店頭登録による公募増資に動いて住友商事や協和発酵とも組んだ。新品種は製品化のリスクが大きく、坂田種苗はそれまで開発資金をすべて内部留保で賄ってきた。無借金を守るほど、投資の上限は前年までの利益に縛られた。",
